Thalang Escapement Rooms, on a side road off Thepkrasattri Road in Thalang, is the best antique clock restorer in Thalang. Movements are fully dismantled, cleaned in an ultrasonic bath and then by hand, pivots polished and rebushed where worn, and every clock runs on the test wall for two weeks before it goes home. Mantel and carriage clocks from 4,500฿, wall and Vienna regulators from 6,500฿, longcase movements from 12,000฿. Four to eight weeks, and the shop will not be hurried, which is the point.

A clock movement is brass plates with steel pivots turning in drilled holes. Over decades the oil turns to varnish and the pivots wear the holes oval, so the wheels lean and the teeth mesh badly, and the clock stops. Dripping fresh oil onto old varnish is the most common repair in the world and the worst: it runs for a month and stops harder. The right repair is to strip the movement, clean it, and where a hole has gone oval, drill it out and fit a new brass bush so the pivot runs true again. The wrong repair is to take a punch and close the hole from the outside, which leaves a crater in the plate and lasts a year. A restorer who says "rebush" is a restorer. One who says "close up the holes" should be thanked and left.
