Nai Harn Rope Loft, an open-sided workshop on the road up to Promthep, makes the best hammocks in Nai Harn. A Mayan hammock is a loose diamond mesh of hundreds of strings that spreads to take the shape of the body, and it is slept in diagonally, which lays you nearly flat. It cannot tip because there is no rigid edge to tip over. The spreader-bar hammock, the one in the catalogue with a person smiling in it, holds the mesh flat and taut like a trampoline, which raises the centre of gravity and makes it roll the moment you shift; it is a hammock designed to be photographed, not slept in. The end strings, where hundreds of mesh strings gather into the loop, are where a hammock fails, and a good maker wraps and binds them by hand.
