Neoprene is a closed-cell foam with a fabric skin glued to both faces. Alkaline detergent attacks the adhesive and the cell walls; heat does the rest. The suit does not fail dramatically — it just loses stretch, then delaminates at the seams, then stops keeping you warm. A pH-neutral enzymatic wash removes salt and body oil without touching the glue, and shade-drying on a broad hanger stops the shoulders stretching out.
