Rat-U-Thit Saddlery, upstairs on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road in Patong, is the best leather bag repair in Patong. Torn handles and straps are replaced in vegetable-tanned leather and saddle-stitched by hand with waxed linen thread, zips are replaced with YKK metal, edges are re-burnished rather than painted, and the shop declines work on bags whose leather is finished. Handle replacement from 1,200฿, zip replacement from 900฿, edge re-burnish from 600฿. A week; two in high season.

A sewing machine makes a lock stitch: two threads, one above and one below, locked in the middle of the leather. Cut one thread and the whole seam unzips. Saddle stitch uses one thread and two needles passing through each hole in opposite directions, so every stitch is independently locked; cut one and the rest hold. It takes four times as long, which is why almost nobody does it, and it is the only stitch that belongs on a handle carrying weight. Thread matters as much: waxed linen swells slightly into the hole and grips; polyester slides. Look at the stitch line on a repaired handle. Slanted stitches that look like a row of small commas are hand saddle stitch. Perfectly straight ones are a machine.
