Kata Night Market is a huge covered hall of food stalls and cocktail bars, with live music playing through the evening and the crowd building after sunset. Muay Thai shorts and souvenirs fill the stalls around the edge, and haggling is expected. Most people come to eat, grilled seafood and crispy pork off the stalls with roti after, and the braver ones try crocodile.

Karon Viewpoint's Thai name, Kho Sam Haad, means the Hill of the Three Beaches, and locals still call it Kata Viewpoint. Kata Noi lies directly below, Kata sits in the middle with the small island of Koh Poo offshore, and Karon stretches north into the distance. Late in the afternoon the light on Kata Noi Bay goes from pale and flat to warm, and a reggae vendor has sold necklaces from the same spot for years.

Kata Noi is a small bay of soft sand and clear turquoise water, with resorts set back behind it and far fewer people than the main beach. The entry is shallow, there is snorkeling off the rocks, and longtail boats on the left side run trips to nearby beaches. Late in the day people stay for the sunset, under a hired umbrella or on a towel on the sand.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
