Ecoloft is built of polished concrete and pinewood, an industrial look softened with warm wood, a short walk from Phuket Old Town. On the roof, an infinity pool with sun beds looks out over the city. Some rooms look out to the hills, and each morning reception sets out coffee with small handmade cakes from a local bakery.

The Tint at Phuket Town is a boutique hotel done in bright pastels, with each floor painted its own color and cheerful quotes on the bedroom walls. It stands right beside the Limelight Avenue shopping center, with an outdoor pool behind its Sino-Portuguese front. The Indy night market and the cafes and old shophouses of Phuket Old Town are all a short walk away.

The Memory at On On Hotel was built in 1927 to a design by an architect from Penang, and its rooms appeared in the opening scenes of the 2000 film The Beach. A 2012 restoration kept both grand staircases and turned the open center of the building into a red-tiled courtyard with a pond, overlooked by lounges and walkways. The reception has floral Sino-Portuguese tiles, travel trunks from the 1920s and a small museum of old photographs, and arrivals are met with cold towels and rose tea.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
