Baba Tastes is a four-hour walk through the family shops of Phuket Old Town, run by A Chef's Tour and built around Baba cooking, the Chinese and Malay food that came with the island's tin mining families. Groups meet at the San Chao Jui Tui shrine and are capped at eight. Among more than 15 tastings is the Michelin-rated dry rice porridge at Go Benz, and guides such as Lucky and Gigi tell the history behind each dish.

“I ate great food and tried dishes I would never have on my own.”

Southern Flavors is the daytime tour from A Chef's Tour, and it starts among the stalls of the Ranong Road market before moving into the backstreets of the old town. Its 15 or more tastings cover four cooking traditions, Thai, Chinese, Malay and Burmese, and the Burmese stop serves curry with naan from a wood fire. Groups are capped at eight, and vegetarians and pescatarians can join with two or three fewer tastings.

“Informative tour with delicious food. My 10 year old also enjoyed.”

This private evening tour from Bangkok Food Tours collects each group at its hotel and begins at sunset on Khao Rang Hill, beside the golden Buddha above Phuket Town. From there it moves to Saphan Hin, the Kua Tien Keng shrine and the old town after dark, with five food stops and more than ten dishes and drinks. The tastings follow Phuket's Peranakan and Muslim cooking, from O-Tao at a Michelin-recognized kitchen to the dessert Oh Aew.

“Amazing food, amazing tour guide. Gave us lots of recipes to try ourselves.”

How the points work

We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.

Award badges

Each business in the top 3 can show its Phuket Ranked award on its own website, free of charge. Ask and we will send the badge and add it for you.
