Makro is the wholesale cash and carry warehouse where Phuket's restaurants and food stalls stock up, and its biggest store on the island is a vast, well organized hall. Most goods come in bulk packs at a saving, while plenty is also sold by the piece at retail prices. Stock turns over fast, so the fish and meat are fresh, and the wine and spirits are priced to compete.

Villa Market is the Thai chain expats seek out for groceries from home, and its Phuket stores carry dairy from the United States and Australia, French jams and Swedish specialties beside Thai coffee beans from Chiang Mai and Chumphon. The meat counter stocks S-Pure pork, a favorite for the grill, and the wine shelves run deep. It also stocks Marmite, Heinz condiments, British cereals and harder to find items such as cherry tomatoes.

Tops is the supermarket arm of Central Group, and its store inside Central Phuket is bright, neatly laid out and easy to find your way around. The shelves lean toward bakers and home cooks, with serious baking supplies, harder to find spices and plenty of European food next to fresh fruit and vegetables. The baby food aisle carries a wider range than most shops in Thailand, and staff handle tax refund paperwork quickly.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
Award badges
Each business in the top 3 can show its Phuket Ranked award on its own website, free of charge. Ask and we will send the badge and add it for you.
