Phuket Art Village is a cluster of studios that its Thai artists built themselves around a courtyard shaded by a great banyan tree, down a quiet lane in Rawai. Visitors can wander from gallery to gallery and often find the painters at work, and most of the pieces on show can be bought straight from the artists who made them. One studio's loft stages Thai shadow puppet shows, and a little rooftop up among the trees serves drinks.

Soul of Asia Gallery, curated by Eric Smulders and built on a legacy of Dutch art collectors, hangs lithographs by masters such as Picasso and Warhol beside paintings by Chinese and Vietnamese artists. Rare Asian antiques and antique furniture fill the rest of the space, much of it chosen with interior design in mind. Smulders opened his first shop in 2003 in an old Sino-Portuguese shophouse in Phuket Town, and the gallery now trades from Boat Lagoon Marina.

Napas Art Gallery is the home studio of husband and wife painters Soon Papan and Juffy Joob, who opened it in Cherng Talay in 2013 and still paint there during opening hours. Soon paints the Andaman coast with a surreal twist, hiding animals in the rocks of Phang Nga Bay, and his six-meter Pearl of the Andaman Sea took about 200 hours to finish. Juffy's Bridal Cat series dresses Thai cats in the Baba wedding costume of old Phuket, picked out in gold.
