Hokkien families who made their money in tin paid for this Sino-Portuguese building in 1934 as Phuket's first Chinese-language school, and its alumni restored it as a museum in 2010. Thirteen rooms over two floors follow the settlers from the mines and the Angyee secret societies to Baba-Peranakan food, dress and the origins of the Vegetarian Festival in 1825. On the front gable a red bat stands for the old teaching that literacy is the greatest fortune.

Museum Phuket is a free museum in two historic buildings that face each other across Phang Nga Road in the Old Town, a former bank and the old police station with its clock tower. The exhibits follow Phuket's story from tin mining and Chinese migration to Peranakan culture, with digital art installations among them. It fits easily into a walk around the Old Town.
“It provides a nice introduction on the history of Phuket, the influence of Chinese migrants, the tin mining and culture.”

The Phuket Mining Museum fills a monumental pink Sino-Portuguese building in the hills of Kathu, behind Loch Palm Golf Club, and tells how tin mining and the Chinese miners who came for it shaped the island. Its most photographed piece is a scale model of a mine with about 100 figurines at work, and further in, a reproduction of an old Phuket town has barges and workshops peopled with wax figures. Outside, old mining machinery stands in a park with views of the hills.
“It is a very good place to spend an hour.”

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
