Promthep Cape is a grassy headland over the Andaman Sea, and by late afternoon the viewpoint fills with people waiting for the sun to drop. The breeze keeps the open hilltop cool while the sky turns orange and purple, and a sandy trail of about eight minutes leads down to the very end of the cape. Up top stand a lighthouse and a shrine crowded with carved wooden elephants.

A big white wind turbine has stood on this hill since at least 1994, with Ya Nui Beach on one side and the bay of Nai Harn on the other. Paragliders launch from the slope, which falls steeply about 40 meters to the waves, and the site has hosted a couple of competitions. Koh Man, a small uninhabited island, sits just off the coast as the sun goes down, and the crowd up here is smaller and mostly local.

Karon Viewpoint's Thai name, Kho Sam Haad, means the Hill of the Three Beaches, and locals still call it Kata Viewpoint. Kata Noi lies directly below, Kata sits in the middle with the small island of Koh Poo offshore, and Karon stretches north into the distance. Late in the afternoon the light on Kata Noi Bay goes from pale and flat to warm, and a reggae vendor has sold necklaces from the same spot for years.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
