Banyan Tree Phuket opened in 1994 as the brand's first resort and started the idea it became known for, villas each with a pool of their own, now 217 of them around a lagoon on an 89-acre estate. At the Terra Kids Club, children join workshops built on local traditions, and the resort also runs hands-on Thai cooking classes. Down on Bang Tao Beach, the Rava Beach Club has a kids' pool and play area of its own.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket opened in 1987 as one of the first five-star hotels in the Laguna complex, and it has kept its traditional Thai design, with a high-ceilinged lobby dressed in wood and orchids. Most rooms are built along the beachfront of Bang Tao, and Benjarong serves Thai food inside a traditional Thai teak house looking over the lagoon. The family program includes a surf camp, junior Muay Thai and a farm tour with a treasure hunt, and children can sleep out in tents at the Bonfire Kids' Campout.

Mövenpick Resort Bangtao Beach mixes classic Thai and contemporary design across its residences, and an in-residence chef is part of its dining lineup. Each day the resort sets out bite-size chocolate creations for guests, and the menus bring Swiss dishes to the table beside world cuisines with a Thai touch. The start of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon and Ironman 70.3 Phuket is minutes away, and racers staying here get a free early breakfast and a shuttle to the start line.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
