Anantara's pool villas stand between the Andaman Sea and the mangroves of Sirinat National Park, on the longest beach on the island and well away from the busy south. Bill Bensley laid out the grounds, with wooden walkways over lotus ponds and a lagoon pool running along the shore, and the villas are Thai in style, with teak, high ceilings and a pool of their own. Dinner can be omakase up in the Treehouse or seafood at Sea Fire Salt, and breakfast includes a full Thai spread with crab curry and noodles.

JW Marriott Phuket spreads across 11 hectares of tropical gardens, freshwater ponds and preserved coastal wetland directly on Mai Khao Beach, where sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Its Kids Turtle Warriors program teaches children about the sick and injured turtles recovering at the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation. Dining runs from teppanyaki at Benihana to Smokehouse barbecue at the M Beach Club pool bar, and the rooms use custom pieces made with Jim Thompson Thai silk.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
