The Nai Harn is a late modernist building that steps down a hillside to the sea, with plain interiors of warm wood and clean lines that leave the view to the bay. The higher suites look straight out over the water from wide terraces, and the beach is a short walk down the hill. It suits travelers who want design and a calm southern beach over the bars of Patong, with sunset cocktails at Reflections, the rooftop bar.

Sunsuri sits on a hillside above Nai Harn Lake, and its rooms mix rustic decor and wooden Asian artwork with contemporary furniture. Five pools spread across the grounds, including one 4 meters deep, along with a high diving ledge and a water slide. The Sip Bar has a terrace over the pools, and the Sandbox Kids' Club keeps children busy with video game consoles and computers.

Baan Krating hides its thatched-roof Thai bungalows in jungle on the hill above Ao Sane, at the southern tip of Phuket. Wooden walkways wind through palms and tropical gardens to join the bungalows to the pool and restaurant, to the steady hum of cicadas. Guests have their own private patch of Ao Sane Beach below, where fish swim close to shore and reception rents out snorkels and sea kayaks.
“It really is a hideaway an escape from the stresses of modern life.”

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
