Soi Romanee was once Phuket Town's red-light lane, and its short row of restored shophouses is now painted in pastels and hung with lanterns over the café tables. At the Thalang Road end, Aungku bakery draws a queue for photos against its pink flower wall and mirrors, and Baan Rommanee has a sunflower wall outside. The lane fills up as the morning goes on, so the earliest hours and dusk, when the lanterns come on, are the quietest.

“The colourful façades and little shops give the street a lovely atmosphere, and there are plenty of nice details to look at and photograph.”

“It has sino European architecture, cafes and the road leads to Wat Mongkhon Nimit at its other end.”

Thalang Road runs through the middle of Old Phuket Town between rows of 19th-century Sino-Portuguese shophouses, their doors, shutters and balconies painted in a run of different colours. On Sunday evenings the road closes to traffic for the Lard Yai walking street market, and the stalls, street performers and lit facades become the picture. The Loof Bar has a rooftop above the street for looking down on it at sunset.

“lined with colourful and ornate Sino-Portuguese and Chinese-European buildings that date back to the 19th century”

Dibuk Road has a long run of handsome Sino-Portuguese houses but less of Thalang Road's crowd, which suits anyone who wants to study the buildings slowly. The turquoise Sino-European building on its corner with Yaowarat Road is the one most people come to photograph, and traffic at that junction means the clearest shots come first thing in the morning. Murals cover walls in the side lanes off Dibuk, from Thai-style illustrations to bold graffiti.

“The Dibuk road, is what people mean when they speak about Phuket Old town.”

How the points work

We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.

Award badges

Each business in the top 3 can show its Phuket Ranked award on its own website, free of charge. Ask and we will send the badge and add it for you.
