The Pad Thai Shop is a tiny open-air storefront in Karon with bare wood and brick walls, plastic chairs and an open kitchen where every dish is cooked to order. The menu covers pad Thai, pad kra pao, beef noodle soup and crab fried rice, and a rack of sauces on each table lets diners season their food the way Thai people do. Small soups and sides come free with the meal, and sticky rice with banana wrapped in banana leaf makes a sweet finish.

Portosino, the all-day restaurant at Avista Grande above Karon Beach, cooks Thai, Indian and international food, and Chef Rana's lamb rogan josh is the dish guests mention most. Breakfast is a buffet of French pastries, egg stations and local items such as Chinese doughnuts and Thai iced tea, and at least half of what the kitchen uses is sourced locally. The kitchen also runs cooking classes in which you learn three dishes, booked a day ahead.

Jay's Kitchen in Karon covers a lot of ground, from Thai curries and tom yum to sushi, burgers and pizza, and it seasons its Thai dishes gently enough for grandparents and small children. Panang chicken curry, beef massaman and chicken satay are among the Thai dishes diners recommend, and the seafood is listed as caught daily. A kids corner keeps little ones busy, and happy hour runs from 5 to 7 pm.
