Auntie Taew, a Phuket Baba of Hokkien descent, reopened Krua N.C. in 2022 after the pandemic had shut it, once friends and loyal customers asked her to. From 7 in the morning the ground floor sells khanom jeen, rice noodles with a curry that changes from day to day, crab curry one morning and the pungent fish-innards kaeng tai pla another, served with baskets of fresh greens. Upstairs at lunchtime the kitchen cooks old Phuket dishes to order in three sizes, among them moo hong, pork braised with black pepper, and prawns fried with shrimp paste and sator beans.

Lock Tien fries its thick yellow Hokkien noodles with pork, squid and egg until they pick up a little char, then tops them with red char siu. The fresh spring rolls, which its sign calls hundred-year spring rolls, are wrapped in skins made in house and covered in a thick, sweet brown sauce. You order at the hatch from photo panels in Thai and English, in the shophouse on Bangkok Road where the family moved in 2025 after leaving its old corner food court.

Kota has made Hainanese chicken rice since the 1970s without changing its short menu, and the plate comes with a small bowl of chicken soup and a sweet house sauce served hot. The ruam plate adds red pork and crispy pork to the chicken, and if the sauces are new to you, the staff will show you how to mix them. Locals fill the shop at lunchtime, and a meal still costs very little.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
