Maru opened in Patong in 2013 and is run by Koreans, in a dining room big enough for groups. Six banchan arrive with every meal, and the radish kimchi and the seasoned seaweed have won particular praise. The menu runs from kimbap and kimchi fried rice to soft tofu stew and grilled meats, and drinks from water to soju come in glasses chilled in the fridge.

Oppa fries its chicken until crisp while the meat stays juicy, then tosses it in Korean sauces, sweet and spicy yangnyeom or garlic among them, with kimchi and pickles on the side. The Patong shop on Phisit Korani Road is small and inexpensive, and makes burgers too for anyone who wants a break from chicken.
