Lillo Island is the family-run restaurant of a small Kamala resort, with tables set right on the beach under big trees. The day's catch is laid out on ice to choose from, and the Thai dishes diners come back for include fish in lime sauce, soft-shell crab and pomelo salad. The house starter is a basket of deep-fried leaves with a shrimp dipping sauce, and at sunset there is often a line for tables.

Smile Bar started in 2000 as a wooden drinks kiosk on Kamala Beach and has grown into a full restaurant with tables set between rows of coconut palms. Its charcoal-roasted chicken is marinated for more than 12 hours in a house recipe, and the rest of the menu leans on locally caught seafood off the grill. After dark, fire dancers perform on the sand in front of the tables.
“The food is not only delicious but beautifully presented as well.”

Silk is the Thai restaurant of Andara Resort, reached through large wooden doors into a room of polished wood and high ceilings above Kamala Beach. The kitchen shows its skill in goong sarong, prawns wrapped in fine vermicelli and fried crisp, and in gaeng kati poo, a crab curry in coconut milk. Tables on the covered terrace catch the breeze and the last light of the day over a long pool lined with tall palms, a setting suited to anniversaries and proposals.
“Stir-fried Phuket green leaf was really good actually- a bit of smoky wok hei perhaps.”

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
