Mor Mu Dong is a southern Thai seafood restaurant that Mor and his wife opened about 23 years ago on family land beside the Mu Dong canal, starting with two tables and food cooked to order. The menu includes pla tu yad sai, a deboned mackerel filled with curry paste and fried, and squid in lime, garlic and chili. The Michelin Guide gives it a Bib Gourmand, its award for good cooking at a fair price, and Andrew Zimmern featured it on Bizarre Foods.

Laem Hin Seafood is a restaurant on a broad wooden terrace raised on stilts over the water, looking out to Coconut Island. Local fishermen bring in the fish, crabs and prawns, which wait alive in big tanks by the kitchen, and most of it is sold by the 100 grams so each table picks its own portion. The cooking is southern Thai, with dishes such as hor mok talay, a seafood curry steamed in banana leaves, and gaeng som pla, a sour and spicy fish curry.
“This rustic overwater restaurant is always buzzing with locals.”

One family has run Bang Pae Seafood for decades from an open-sided pavilion on the edge of the mangroves, and at high tide the water of Phang Nga Bay rises right up to the restaurant. Blue crab is the house specialty, and one longtime Phuket food writer calls it the best on the island. Alongside the crab, the kitchen makes southern soups such as poh tae and a coconut broth with prawns and pak miang leaves.
“Tom kha gai (chicken meat with coconut milk) is the best anywhere I have eaten thai food.”

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
