Sync roasts its own coffee, with beans from Thailand and Laos alongside blends from further afield, and sells the roasted beans to take home. The room is roomy and industrial in style, a cool place to sit out the midday humidity, and the scone and croissant have their own following. Most people order a long black or a flat white; the more curious try a signature drink such as the Jelly Affogato.

936 is a small, owner-run coffee shop with paintings on the walls, and the owner is often there to greet the people who come in every morning of their stay. The coffee is strong, the oat milk is Oatly, and breakfasts are simple, a warm chocolate croissant or a full breakfast plate. Beer and wine are on the list too, for later in the day.

Pastry chef Ladda Wanmuda, known as Chef Wa, bakes more than twenty cakes, including banana with salted caramel, and the coffee comes from the northern Thai highlands. It serves afternoon tea, and for birthdays the staff add a handwritten card.

How the points work
We read every independent published best-of list we can find for the question. Each list gives 10 points for first place, 9 for second, down to 1 for tenth, and 5 points to each place on a list with no order. Points are added up. A business must be in the top 10 of at least two lists to be ranked. Rankings are never sold. Full method.
